What is DeMolay?

If you have never heard of the Order of DeMolay or are new to it and want to learn more, here is a brief overview of what DeMolay is all about.

Why the name DeMolay?

The name DeMolay comes from the great martyr Jacques DeMolay (pictured below) who was the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar in France in the Middle Ages. The name was chosen for our Order because DeMolay showed fidelity to his brethern and would not give up that loyalty even though efforts were made to do so. He died as of a result and we honor his fidelity with our organization.

When and why was the Order of DeMolay founded?

The Order of DeMolay was founded in 1919 by Frank S. Land, a Master Mason in Kansas City, Missouri. He had hired a young man by the name of Louis Lower who was fatherless. Land felt that boys liked him needed an organization to help young men such as Lower and founded the Order of DeMolay. DeMolay has since grown to the one of the largest fraternal organizations in the world.

What are the qualifications for membership?

The Order of DeMolay is open to young men who are good in character and are between the ages of 12 and 21 years of age. DeMolay chapters (including Northern Neck) work closely with two Masonic youth organizations for young women. These are the International Order of Job's Daughters and the International Order of Rainbow for Girls.

How large is the Order of DeMolay?

The Order of DeMolay has chapters in all 50 states in the US as well as in the following countries: Austrailia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, and the Philipines.
